If I Were Mayor...
These fourth graders have some great ideas!
What would you do as Mayor?
Every year, the Maryland Municipal League (MML) and the Maryland Mayor's Association hold an essay contest for fourth graders to write about what they would do if there were Mayor. Students have written about doing things like enacting accessability measures, engaging community residents in community service and public safety events, or improving the environment through cleanups or plantings.
This year, there were seven (yes, seven!) "If I Were Mayor, I Would..." outstanding essayists from the City, including two MML semi-finalists. The winners came from Hollywood Elementary, Holy Redeemer School, Al-Huda School and Paint Branch Elementary. These outstanding essayists (pictured above) read their award-winning essays during the May 14 Mayor and Council Meeting and were presented with certificates by the Mayor.
As mayor, the essayists wrote about how they would decrease littering, plant more trees and flowers, create safety, education and economic action plans, improve tourism, end bullying, increase cultural awareness and help those less fortunate. The students came up with wonderful ideas on how to bring the community together and ways to improve it.
Congratulations to all of outstanding essayists, and to all the participating fourth graders who dreamt of a way to improve our world.
