Going on Vacation?
Tips to Help Prevent Breaking & Entering
Summer means vacations and a potential for burglars to strike. Help protect your home and property with these 12 tips:
- Use timers to switch lights on and off at random, cancel newspapers and put a hold on your mail deliveries while away on vacation.
- Walk around your home, inside and out, to figure out the weakest link in your security.
- Install keyed window locks, deadbolts on doors, and toughened glass in windows and doors.
- Be wary about who you allow into your home and how much information you give about your belongings and schedule. Don’t leave valuables in view of inside or from outside the house.
- Consider motion-activated lights, even on the street outside your home.
- Neighborhood Watch, Video Surveillance, No Parking and No Outlet signs can be effective deterrents against home burglary as can a dog.
- Don’t leave things like lawn mowers and bikes unattended outside; lock them up.
- Don’t hide a key - burglars know all those “secret” places
- Avoid mentioning travel plans online.
- Keep a record of valuable personal property: ex. serial numbers and pictures.
- Most burglaries occur in the mornings.
- Keep doors, windows and garages locked when not home.
