Pet Parasites

There are several annoying parasites that can have extreme adverse effects on our pets. Ticks, fleas and heartworms can be fatal in some cases if not treated. Prevention is key to keeping pets healthy.

With the mild winter, ticks will be prolific this year. There is a myth that ticks die in winter but this not the case. They may be less active but once the warm weather begins, they will be active once again. There are different varieties of ticks, all of which can affect your pet. Dogs and not immune to Lyme disease caused by deer ticks which can cause arthritic-like symptoms, among other maladies.

Fleas thrive in humid climates with temperatures between 65 and 85 degrees. Again, with the mild winter, the expectation is that there will be an influx of these parasites. They can be found on any animal that lives outdoors and once your pet goes outside, they can bring them in to infest any indoor pet. It is difficult to eradicate fleas so again, prevention is important. Use a veterinarian approved product for prevention.

Heartworm is caused by mosquito bites and can result in severe medical issues. All standing water in your yard should be eliminated but even with the best precautions, this will not guarantee your pet’s safety. Animals can be tested for heartworm and if you suspect a problem, it is important that you take your pet to the vet. 100% of untreated cases of Canine Heartworm are fatal.

It is easy to prevent these parasites from attacking your pets. Flea and tick medications preventions may be purchased over the counter or through a veterinarian. Heartworm medication, however, is only available with a prescription. It is important that these medications be used year-round, not just during warm weather.
