It's Time to Plan Your Spring Garden!

In early spring you can plant cool weather plants like kale, radishes, spinach, and beets that thrive in cooler weather and wilt in the summer heat. You can start your plants indoors in small pots and re-plant them outdoors as seedlings once the soil thaws. Make sure to purchase organic seeds and use organic compost from your own kitchen to nourish your plants.

Changes to the City of College Park Codes for Animal Chapter

On October 27, 2020, the City Council adopted Ordinance 20-O-11 which amended and renamed City Code Chapter 102 as the City's “Animal Welfare” Code. The changes add more clarity and to mirror Prince George’s County code. These changes were effective on November 17, 2020. The highlights of these changes are listed as follows:

  • The definition of a “dangerous animal” to be more descriptive, and to recognize that the County Commission decides which animals will be considered “dangerous.”
  • An addition that mirrors the County’s Code, that ear tipped feral cats (an indication that a cat had been spayed or neutered) are to be released by the City’s Animal Control Officer unless the cat shows any sign of disease or injury.
  • An edit deeming any stray, impunded animal not claimed after 3 weekdays as “abandoned.”
  • An addition that reflects the County’s Code on prohibited actions including, but not limited to providing proper food, shelter, water, and veterinary care, prohibiting carrying “upon a vehicle” in a manner that jeopardizes an animal’s safety, leaving an animal in a standing or parked vehicle, and exposing or giving poison or harmful substances to an animal.

The intention of these changes is to reflect County wide regulations and to improve the health and welfare of animals in the City. For any questions about the changes in codes or existing codes, please feel free to contact the City’s Animal Control at 240-487-3575, email animalcontrol@collgeparkmd.gov or click here to view the City codes in full.
