Meet the Mayor
Dr. Fazlul Kabir is the current Mayor of the City of College Park. Kabir. He has lived in east Hollywood with his wife since 2003.
Dr. Kabir, has represented District 1 for the past 12 years. Prior to making College Park his home, he lived in England, where he received his Ph.D. in Electrical Engineering, and in Canada. For his day job, he works as an information architect for the Federal Government. He has also taught Cybersecurity at the University of Maryland for eight years.
In close collaboration with residents and my Council colleagues, Dr. Kabir helped found College Park Day, restart the College Park Parade, start the new “Here & Now” College Park newspaper, and start a Farmer’s Market. He successfully advocated for a new Duvall Field, a neighborhood Dog Park, Gateway Park, Hollywood Streetscape, protected bike lanes and a community center. He has been running a daily blog, KabirCares.org, since 2009.
Dr. Kabir has advocated for strong public safety, better code enforcement, smart economic development, sustainable and green programs, aging-in-place for our seniors, partnership with the University, enhanced education in our schools, affordable housing, and a healthy mode of transportation.
On Tuesday, May 16, Fazlul Kabir was sworn in as Mayor of College Park, leaving a vacancy on the City Council from District 1.
In accordance with the City Charter, the vacancy may be filled by appointment within 30 days (by June 15) by majority vote of the Council. The appointed term will end in December 2023 when the next Mayor and Council are sworn in following the November election.
The City Council received applications from residents interested in being appointed and intends to consider an appointment during the June 13 Council meeting.
