Grab Bar Rebate Program

College Park Launches A Grab Bar Rebate Program To Help Reduce Fall Risk For Seniors
Falls are one of the most common and serious health risks facing older adults, but they are not an inevitable part of aging. According to the CDC, 1 in 4 adults experience a fall each year, often resulting in serious injuries such as fractures or head trauma. Because most falls happen at home, improving home safety is one of the most effective ways to reduce risk and protect independence.
The National Institute on Aging stresses that small changes in the home environment can make a big difference. Common hazards include loose rugs, cluttered walkways, poor lighting, and stairs without handrails. Seniors are encouraged to remove tripping hazards, secure or remove throw rugs, and keep frequently used items within easy reach to avoid climbing or stretching. Installing grab bars in bathrooms, handrails on both sides of stairways, and non-slip mats in tubs and showers, can greatly reduce the chance of falling. The CDC also recommends improving lighting throughout the home, especially in hallways, staircases, and entryways. Wearing supportive, non-slip shoes indoors adds another layer of protection.
Grab Bar Rebate Program:
To help mitigate fall risks in the home, the City of College Park is offering a rebate of up to $150 to College Park residents over the age of 62 for the purchase and/or installation of a grab bar in their home. Here’s how it works:
- The homeowner arranges for the purchase/installation of grab bar(s) in their home, using their own contractor.
- After installation, the homeowner completes the Grab Bar Rebate application and submits it to the Department of Youth, Family and Senior Services, 4912 Nantucket Road, College Park.
- Applications are available in paper or online.
- Paper applications are available at any City building or call YFSS at 240-487-3550 to have one mailed to you.
- Online application will be available in March 2026 and published on the City’s website and media outlets.
- The application must include supporting documentation:
- Proof of installation which could be a picture or receipt from a handyman or contractor showing the installation of the grab bar at a single-family home in the City of College Park.
- Proof that at least one of the homeowners is over age 62.
- One rebate per household.
- The rebate must not exceed the total cost of the purchase/installation of the grab bar.
- Subject to the availability of funding.
